Hiking Toronto for Dog Lovers

In March, I published a blog about a hike from the Sunnybrook Off-Leash Dog park . This blog also starts at the dog park, but the walk goes in the other direction to York University Glendon Campus. Suggested Route Sunnybrook Dog Park Park in a lot near the dog park. If you arrive from Leslie Street, park near the Sunnybrook Stables . If you come from Bayview, park near the trailhead . Sunnybrook Off-Leash Dog Park is extremely popular. There is a particular area for small dogs, so don't feel intimidated by all the large dogs in this photo. There are benches to sit in the shade and a water tap to give drinks to the dogs. Glendon Forest Leave the dog park from the gate nearest to the parking lot. With the river to your right, walk onto the trail directly ahead of you. The trail is not paved but is well worn.  You can stay on the main path throughout this hike, but Lucy and I took the smaller footpath along the river. There are trails in the woods, paved paths, and a vast off-leash dog area. It is a nice mix of experiences with an occasional encounter with a creek or river. History We can thank the Kilgour family for this fabulous park. In 1909, Joseph Kilgour and his wife Alice established Sunnybrook Farms on a 200-acre lot. Joseph and his brother made their fortune in the paper industry, specializing in cardboard and paper bags. After the death of her husband, Alice donated the property to the City of Toronto on condition that it never be developed. Many of the original buildings and stables still exist. Visit Wilket Creek Park and Don Mills Trail Explore wilderness within the city Wilket Creek Park is in a valley that lies west of Leslie Street, just south of Edward's Gardens at Lawrence Ave. The trail is 2 km in length and features a paved path, a creek, and mature deciduous trees.  The park is stunning in the fall when the leaves change colour. Parking There are several places where you can start your hike in Wilket Creek Park. My suggestion is to park at the southern entrance, 1132 Leslie Street, Toronto. This is near the Crosstown construction on Eglinton. At the end of the blog, I give a few other parking spots in case you wish to avoid this area until they are finished. Park at the first parking lot on the right when you enter the park via Leslie Street. Suggested Route Go down the steps from the northwest end of the parking lot to begin the suggested route.
